Most parents want their kids to spend a little less time staring at screens. Ben has his kids living in the forest.

They hunt their dinner, climb rock faces and discuss books that plenty of adults would struggle to finish. They’re exceptionally well prepared for life in the woods, but dinner with the relatives is an entirely different matter.

**What It’s About**

Viggo Mortensen plays Ben, a father raising six children deep in the Pacific Northwest. Their days combine demanding physical training with an education that leaves little room for television, junk food or accepting an answer without questioning it.

Ben loves his children, and he takes preparing them for adulthood seriously. He also has firm opinions about almost everything, including how little the outside world has to offer them.

When their mother dies, the family leaves the forest to attend her funeral. Traveling together in an old bus, they encounter relatives who have serious concerns about Ben’s parenting.

His father-in-law, Jack (Frank Langella), is particularly unwilling to accept that this is a reasonable way for his grandchildren to grow up. Meanwhile, the children begin discovering experiences and possibilities their father’s carefully constructed world hasn’t provided.

**Who It’s For**

*Captain Fantastic* is for viewers who enjoy unusual characters and family stories with something worth arguing about afterward. There’s humor in watching these articulate, capable children navigate ordinary social situations, but the family’s grief keeps those encounters from becoming a string of jokes.

Mortensen makes Ben’s devotion believable without smoothing away his arrogance. You can admire the attention he gives his children and still wonder what happens when one of them wants a life he wouldn’t choose.

Some encounters make conventional life look conveniently foolish, and a few of the family’s eccentricities feel exaggerated for effect. But the disagreements matter because the children have to live with the decisions. If you enjoy movies that give you reasons to sympathize with a parent while questioning his judgment, this family is worth spending an evening with.

Viggo Mortensen makes a convincing case for a very different kind of childhood, while giving us plenty of reasons to question the man providing it.
