- Description: Jeff Bridges is terrific as a washed-up country singer trying to put his life back together. With good music, a believable romance, and a strong supporting cast, Crazy Heart is well worth rediscovering.

Jeff Bridges plays a lot of different characters, but I can't think of many he's made more believable than Bad Blake in *Crazy Heart*. He's a country singer whose better days are well behind him. He's drinking too much, playing small gigs in bowling alleys, and generally making a mess of his life. When we meet him, he's pretty much at rock bottom. And Bridges is so convincing that you almost forget you're watching an actor.

What I particularly enjoyed was watching Blake slowly find his way back. Colin Farrell plays Tommy Sweet, a younger country star who owes some of his success to Blake and hasn't forgotten it. Their relationship is an important part of the story, and Farrell is very good in the role. I also really liked Maggie Gyllenhaal as Jean, a journalist who becomes romantically involved with Blake. Their relationship gives the movie some genuine warmth, but it also makes you wonder whether a guy who's made this many mistakes can really change.

The music is good, too, and Bridges looks and sounds like someone who's been performing these songs his entire life. *Crazy Heart* isn't an especially fast-moving movie, and it's not going to surprise you with a lot of twists. But it doesn't need to. It's a good story about a talented man who's spent years getting in his own way, and what happens when he finally has a reason to do something about it. If you missed this one, it's worth going back for.
