Being an excellent sniper is one thing. Having your government make sure the entire enemy army knows just how excellent you are is another.

That's the situation Vassili Zaitsev finds himself in during *Enemy at the Gates*. He's become a hero to the Russian people, but his growing reputation has also made him a target. And the Germans have decided to do something about it.

**What It’s About**

It's 1942, and the Germans are trying to take Stalingrad. The Russians are fighting desperately to hold the city, sending soldiers into battle under circumstances that make survival seem almost impossible.

Jude Law plays Vassili Zaitsev, a young Russian soldier whose remarkable shooting ability catches the attention of Danilov (Joseph Fiennes), a political officer who recognizes an opportunity.

The Russian army needs something to celebrate, and Danilov gives them a hero. Soon, Vassili's exploits are being reported throughout the city, providing a badly needed boost to morale.

Unfortunately, the Germans notice. They send Major König (Ed Harris), an experienced sniper whose assignment is simple: find Vassili and kill him.

What follows is a deadly game of patience and deception, with two skilled marksmen trying to outthink one another in the ruins of Stalingrad.

There's also Tania (Rachel Weisz), a young Soviet soldier who becomes romantically involved with Vassili, complicating his friendship with Danilov.

**Who It’s For**

If you enjoy war movies, particularly those that focus on individual soldiers rather than grand military strategy, *Enemy at the Gates* has plenty to offer.

The sniper confrontations are the main attraction. These aren't typical action sequences with everybody shooting at everybody else. Sometimes the characters spend more time waiting than firing, knowing that one careless movement could be their last.

Jude Law is convincing as a capable but increasingly vulnerable young soldier, while Ed Harris makes König a particularly intimidating opponent. He's quiet, calculating, and never seems especially worried about the man he's been sent to kill.

Some of the most gripping moments involve two men doing almost nothing. That's no small achievement for a war movie, and it makes this a must-watch.

Two expert snipers hunt each other through the ruins of Stalingrad, where patience can be just as deadly as a well-placed bullet.
