- Description: Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr. turn a simple sci-fi survival story into something unexpectedly human. Here’s why Enemy Mine deserves another look.

*Enemy Mine* starts with a setup that sounds like pretty standard 1980s science fiction. Dennis Quaid plays a human fighter pilot at war with an alien race known as the Dracs. After a battle leaves him stranded on a hostile planet, he discovers that one of the enemy pilots, played by Louis Gossett Jr., has survived there too.

They hate each other. Unfortunately, they also need each other.

That is where *Enemy Mine* becomes much more interesting than its premise suggests. The science-fiction setting is really just the framework for a story about two people who have been taught to see each other as enemies and gradually discover that most of what separates them matters a lot less when survival is on the line. Quaid is good, but Gossett is the reason the movie works. Beneath all the makeup, he manages to make the Drac character funny, stubborn, sympathetic and completely believable.

Some of the effects and pacing are unmistakably from 1985, and the movie is more earnest than modern science fiction usually allows itself to be. I think that is part of its charm. *Enemy Mine* isn't really about spaceships or aliens. It's about friendship, prejudice and what happens when you actually get to know the person you've been told to hate.

That makes it much easier to remember than a lot of bigger science-fiction movies from the same era.
