There are movies that don’t need much of a sales pitch.

Brad Pitt. A combat dog. A plane crash. The Alaskan wilderness.

That’ll do.

### What It’s About

*Heart of the Beast* stars Pitt as James Belmont, a former Special Forces soldier traveling with his retired combat dog, Odin. After a plane crash leaves them stranded deep in Alaska, getting back to civilization becomes a matter of surviving long enough to find it. The movie is directed by David Ayer, who previously worked with Pitt on *Fury*, and this is a very different kind of war movie. There are no armies here. Mostly it’s one man, one dog and a whole lot of wilderness that would be perfectly happy to kill both of them. That simplicity is a big part of what works.

The movie doesn’t need an elaborate plot because surviving provides plenty to do. Belmont and Odin have to deal with injuries, weather, dangerous terrain and wildlife, but the movie understands that the relationship between the two of them is more important than any individual obstacle. And the dog isn’t just here because somebody decided Brad Pitt needed a German shepherd on the poster.

Odin is half the movie.

There’s something inherently compelling about watching a capable guy get dropped into a situation where capability only gets you so far. Pitt can carry long stretches without much dialogue, and putting a dog beside him gives the movie an emotional center without turning the whole thing into a speech about friendship.

### Who It’s For

If you like straightforward survival movies, *Heart of the Beast* is about as straightforward as they come. It has huge scenery, dangerous animals, bad weather, Brad Pitt trying to stay alive and a German shepherd you immediately become far too concerned about.

It also has the good sense to keep things moving. At 101 minutes, it doesn’t turn a simple survival story into a two-and-a-half-hour ordeal.

This is not a complicated movie.

It doesn’t need to be.

Sometimes Brad Pitt and a dog trying to get out of Alaska alive is plenty.

💡

Brad Pitt, a dog and the Alaskan wilderness. Sometimes that’s all a movie needs.
