No. *Mystery, Alaska* is **not based on a true story**.

The 1999 movie tells the fictional story of a small Alaska town where hockey is practically a religion. When the town’s amateur team gets the chance to play the New York Rangers in an exhibition game, the whole community gets pulled into the spectacle.

Mystery itself is fictional, as are the players and the game at the center of the movie. The New York Rangers are, of course, a real NHL team, but the Rangers players depicted in the movie are fictional characters played by actors. The exhibition game itself never happened.

The movie does include appearances by several real hockey figures, including former NHL star Phil Esposito, former player Jim Fox, former goaltender and broadcaster John Davidson, Rangers announcer Sam Rosen, and former NHL player and coach Barry Melrose.

That mix of real hockey personalities, a real NHL franchise and a believable small-town hockey culture helps give *Mystery, Alaska* the feel of a true underdog sports story.

But the story itself was created for the film.
