Yes. [*The Boys in the Boat* ](https://www.bensmovieguide.com/the-boys-in-the-boat-2023-review/)is based on the real University of Washington rowing crew that represented the United States at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The movie adapts Daniel James Brown’s nonfiction book, following a team of young men from working-class families during the Great Depression.

Joe Rantz, played by Callum Turner, was a real member of that crew. His difficult upbringing wasn’t invented to give the movie an emotional backstory. His mother died when he was young, and his father later left him to fend for himself at 15\. Rowing became a way to help afford college, rather than the pursuit of an Olympic dream from the outset.

The biggest thing to understand is that the movie speeds up the journey considerably. Joe began rowing at Washington in 1933, three years before the Berlin Games. The film compresses that development into 1936, making the crew’s progress from inexperienced recruits to Olympic contenders seem much faster than it actually was.

The central achievement, however, is real: Washington’s eight rowers and coxswain won Olympic gold in Berlin. Hollywood shortened the road, but it didn’t invent the finish.
