Going shopping in New York and deciding never to go home is a fairly dramatic change of plans. Especially when the people supervising your shopping trip work for the Soviet government.

That’s the situation in *Moscow on the Hudson*, a Robin Williams movie that finds plenty of humor in starting over without pretending it’s easy.

**What It’s About**

Williams plays Vladimir Ivanoff, a saxophonist traveling to America with a Soviet circus. Back home, he has a family, a familiar routine and very little say in how his life works.

During a visit to Bloomingdale’s, Vladimir makes an impulsive decision to defect. Suddenly, a man who arrived with a closely watched touring group is on his own in New York, trying to figure out what comes next.

He gets help from Lionel (Cleavant Derricks), a department-store security guard who welcomes him into his family’s crowded apartment. He also meets Lucia (María Conchita Alonso), an Italian immigrant with her own ideas about building a life in America.

Vladimir has gained the freedom to make his own choices. Now he needs a job, somewhere to live and people who make this unfamiliar place feel a little less lonely.

**Who It’s For**

The first thing that works is Williams. He’s believable as Vladimir, and the accent never becomes the whole performance. You can see the excitement of discovering something new alongside the uncertainty of a man who has left practically everything behind.

There are funny situations, but Vladimir isn’t simply there to misunderstand American customs for our amusement. His friendships matter, his homesickness makes sense, and his enthusiasm gives the movie much of its warmth.

It takes its time, too. Once the defection happens, the story becomes more about everyday adjustments than another big event. Viewers expecting nonstop Williams comedy may find that slower pace a surprise.

But if you enjoy watching him play a decent, vulnerable person with something to figure out, this is an appealing choice. It’s upbeat without suggesting that a fresh start comes with all the answers.

Robin Williams makes a Russian musician’s adjustment to America funny without making the man himself a joke. It’s a warm, sometimes bittersweet story about finding your place somewhere new.
