Michael Keaton has played Batman, Beetlejuice and plenty of guys who have something smart to say. In *My Life*, he plays a man trying to figure out what to say to a child he may never get to know. Bob Jones learns he’s dying of cancer while his wife, played by Nicole Kidman, is expecting their first baby. He begins recording videos so his child will have something of him beyond photographs and other people’s memories.

That’s a pretty effective way to get me interested—and a fairly clear indication that I should keep some tissues nearby. But what I like about *My Life* is that Bob has more to work through than what advice to leave behind. Making those recordings means thinking about who he actually is, including the family relationships he’s spent years avoiding. Keaton brings humor, frustration and vulnerability to a role that could easily have been nothing but sadness.

I wouldn’t recommend this for an evening when you want something light. It’s sentimental, and it makes very little effort to conceal its intentions. But I don’t mind a movie going after my emotions when it gives me people worth caring about. *My Life* does, and Keaton is the reason I’d give it your time.
