Some thrillers give their hero a gun. *Relay* gives him a keyboard, a telephone service and a very good reason to keep his identity to himself.

It’s a setup that makes ordinary phone calls surprisingly tense. Somebody is always listening, somebody is always watching, and the man arranging everything needs to stay several moves ahead.

### What It’s About

Riz Ahmed plays Ash, a secretive fixer who negotiates deals between corporations with something to hide and people holding information they would rather keep buried. His clients want money, protection or simply a way out. The corporations want their secrets back.

Ash operates through strict rules and elaborate precautions, using a telephone relay service to communicate without revealing his own voice. Then Sarah, played by Lily James, asks for help escaping a situation that has become dangerous—and keeping his distance becomes considerably harder.

### Why It Works

The appeal is watching a careful person do a complicated job. Messages, meeting places and seemingly minor instructions become pieces of a larger strategy. You’re watching the plan take shape while wondering where it might fall apart.

Ahmed is well suited to that kind of character. Ash needs to be difficult for the people around him to read while remaining interesting enough for us to follow. His restraint gives the movie much of its tension.

Director David Mackenzie, who also made *Hell or High Water*, builds suspense around the mechanics of the operation. The relay service gives those exchanges an unusual rhythm: even an urgent conversation has to pass through another person.

If you like corporate conspiracy thrillers, cautious professionals and stories that make you pay attention, *Relay* has a strong hook. Go in knowing the premise. Leave the rest for the movie.

A thriller that makes a phone call feel dangerous—and a careful plan feel anything but safe.
