Apparently, “until death do us part” had a little flexibility. That’s where *Seeking a Friend for the End of the World* leaves Steve Carell: facing an approaching asteroid with nobody beside him and no particular idea what to do next. **What It’s About** Carell plays Dodge, an insurance salesman whose response to humanity’s impending extinction is to keep going to work. Other people are throwing parties, abandoning responsibilities and saying things they probably should’ve kept to themselves. Dodge mostly seems bewildered by the whole business. His neighbor Penny, played by Keira Knightley, has a more immediate concern. Her family is in England, commercial flights have stopped, and she’s stranded an ocean away from the people she wants to see. When Penny gives Dodge a letter that was mistakenly delivered to her, he discovers there might still be a reason to look up his high school sweetheart. The two leave town together, hoping to help each other get where they need to go while there’s still time. **Who It’s For** If you like comedies with some sadness underneath them, there’s plenty here to appreciate. Carell makes Dodge’s loneliness believable without constantly asking for sympathy. His quiet, hesitant manner also gives Knightley’s more impulsive Penny somebody to bounce off. The early scenes get laughs from people treating the apocalypse as permission to behave terribly. Some of that humor is deliberately crude, and a few encounters feel like comedy sketches interrupting the trip. As the movie spends more time with Dodge and Penny, though, their conversations become more interesting than the surrounding chaos. The shift can feel uneven. Anyone expecting a steady stream of Steve Carell jokes should adjust those expectations, and the relationship asks you to accept a lot happening in very little time. But that urgency gives their time together its appeal. If you’re open to a funny, melancholy romance that takes its premise seriously, this is worth making time for.
