- Description: A decades-long game of tag shouldn’t be enough to carry a movie. Tag works because underneath all the ridiculousness, it’s really about finding an excuse to stay friends.

A movie about a group of grown men who have been playing the same game of tag for decades sounds like the kind of idea that could get old in about fifteen minutes.

Somehow, [*Tag*](https://www.bensmovieguide.com/tag-2018-review/) makes it work.

Ed Helms, Jon Hamm, Jake Johnson, Hannibal Buress, and Jeremy Renner play longtime friends who have kept one tradition alive as the rest of their lives have changed: every May, the game starts again. There are elaborate disguises, ambushes, ridiculous levels of planning, and one guy—Renner’s Jerry—who has apparently turned avoiding being tagged into a martial art.

The comedy is broad and intentionally ridiculous, but what surprised me is that the movie actually understands why these guys keep doing it. The game is really just an excuse to stay connected. Careers change. People get married. Friends move away. Life gets busy. Tag gives them a reason to keep showing up.

That gives the movie more heart than I expected, without turning it into something overly sentimental.

If you want a comedy that’s easy to watch, genuinely funny, and built around a group of actors who seem like they’re having a very good time together, *Tag* is worth rediscovering. Just don’t overthink the premise. The movie certainly doesn’t.
