*The Ghost and the Darkness* is one of those movies where the true story already sounds like Hollywood got carried away.

Two lions really did terrorize railroad workers in East Africa.

The movie just makes the story even bigger.

## What It’s About

Val Kilmer plays John Henry Patterson, an engineer sent to East Africa in 1898 to build a railroad bridge.

The project is moving along reasonably well until two lions start hunting the workers.

And these aren’t occasional attacks.

The lions keep coming back, people start disappearing, and pretty soon building a bridge is considerably less important than figuring out how to stop two animals that seem perfectly comfortable hunting humans.

Michael Douglas eventually arrives as experienced hunter Charles Remington, and from there *The Ghost and the Darkness* becomes part old-school adventure movie, part survival thriller and part monster movie.

That combination is what makes it work.

The landscapes are huge, the atmosphere is great and there’s a constant feeling that something is sitting just beyond the firelight waiting for somebody to make a mistake.

The movie definitely embellishes the real story—Douglas’s Remington is fictional—but the Tsavo lions were very real.

Sometimes reality gives Hollywood plenty to work with.

## Who It’s For

If you like big, straightforward adventure movies from the 1990s, *The Ghost and the Darkness* is an easy recommendation.

It has dangerous animals, enormous African landscapes, a bridge that desperately needs to get built and Michael Douglas showing up with a very large gun.

What more do you need?

💡

A man-versus-beast adventure that's worth the watch.
