Picking up a hitchhiker is one of those things that seems like a decent thing to do, provided you don't spend too much time thinking about what could go wrong.

*The Hitcher* offers a pretty convincing argument for never doing it again.

What begins as an ordinary drive across the country turns into a nightmare, thanks to a stranger who seems determined to make one young man's life miserable. And miserable doesn't begin to cover it.

**What It’s About**

Jim Halsey (C. Thomas Howell) is driving a car across the country when he spots a hitchhiker standing along a lonely stretch of highway. It's raining, Jim's tired, and giving the guy a lift seems harmless enough.

Unfortunately, the stranger is John Ryder (Rutger Hauer), and it doesn't take long for Jim to realize he's made a terrible mistake.

After a frightening encounter, Jim manages to get Ryder out of his car. That should be the end of it.

It isn't.

Ryder begins appearing wherever Jim goes, leaving a trail of violence behind him and somehow managing to make Jim look responsible. Before long, Jim isn't just running from a murderer. He's running from the police, too.

Jennifer Jason Leigh plays Nash, a young waitress who becomes caught up in Jim's increasingly desperate attempt to survive.

**Who It’s For**

If you enjoy suspense movies that put an ordinary person in an extraordinary situation and then refuse to give him a break, *The Hitcher* is worth your attention.

Rutger Hauer is the reason this movie works as well as it does. He doesn't need to shout, threaten constantly, or explain himself. There's something genuinely unsettling about how calmly he goes about terrorizing Jim. You never quite understand what he wants, which makes him even more frightening.

Howell is believable as a young man who finds himself completely overwhelmed, and the movie does a good job of making the open desert feel like a place with nowhere to escape.

There are some fairly substantial leaps in logic, particularly involving Ryder's ability to anticipate everyone's movements. You'll also need a tolerance for some disturbing violence.

But if you're looking for a tense, nasty little thriller with a particularly memorable villain, *The Hitcher* delivers. Just don't expect a relaxing drive.

Rutger Hauer turns a simple encounter on a deserted highway into a nightmare. The Hitcher is a relentless road thriller that makes you wonder whether stopping to help a stranger is ever a good idea.
