Some movies have to work pretty hard to manufacture suspense.

*Last Breath* doesn't have that problem.

This actually happened.

The 2025 thriller stars **Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu and Finn Cole** as commercial saturation divers working hundreds of feet below the surface of the North Sea. It's based on a real 2012 diving accident and on the 2019 documentary that told the same story.

And once you understand the situation, there really isn't much else the movie needs to do.

### What It’s About

Chris Lemons — played by Finn Cole — is part of a three-man diving team working on an underwater installation.

This isn't recreational scuba diving.

These guys live under pressure for extended periods and descend to depths where the ocean becomes an incredibly hostile workplace. They're connected to their support vessel by an umbilical that provides things like breathing gas, communications and power. Then something goes very wrong. A problem aboard the ship leaves Lemons stranded on the seafloor, disconnected from the systems keeping him alive and with only a few minutes of emergency oxygen.

He's hundreds of feet underwater.

His crewmates know where he is.

They just can't get to him.

That's really all you need to know.

### Why It Works

Last Breath understands that the true story is already incredible enough. It doesn't need a villain. It doesn't need some enormous conspiracy. It doesn't need two hours of character backstory before anything happens.

Put a man at the bottom of the North Sea with almost no oxygen and you've pretty much got my attention.

What surprised me is how effective the movie is at making the job itself interesting. Most of us know almost nothing about saturation diving, so the equipment, procedures and dependence on the ship above become part of the suspense rather than just technical background.

Woody Harrelson is exactly the kind of actor you want in something like this. He doesn't need to dominate the movie. He brings an immediate familiarity and credibility to a story that is really about a group of professionals trying to solve an almost impossible problem. Simu Liu is good here too, but Finn Cole has the hardest job because so much of his part comes down to making you feel just how isolated Chris is.

And that is where *Last Breath* gets you.

The ocean is enormous. It's dark. Help is technically nearby, but it might as well be a hundred miles away. If you like survival movies where the characters have to actually solve a problem rather than simply outrun something, this is a very good one.

It's tense, straightforward and doesn't waste much time.

And knowing that you're watching a dramatization of something that actually happened?

That makes the whole thing considerably harder to shake.

A stripped-down survival thriller that takes one terrifying situation and squeezes every bit of tension out of it.
