Uhtred would like his home back. That doesn’t seem unreasonable, but he keeps getting pulled into other people’s wars, promises, and plans for England. Born a Saxon and raised by Danes, he belongs to both worlds just enough for neither side to entirely trust him. [*The Last Kingdom*](https://www.bensmovieguide.com/the-last-kingdom-2015-hidden-gem/) gives him a sword, a considerable opinion of himself, and plenty of opportunities to make his life more complicated. I found him very easy to keep watching.

But his relationship with King Alfred is what really sold me. Alfred needs Uhtred’s abilities. Uhtred needs things Alfred can give him. You’d think they could work something out. Instead, religion, pride, duty, and two very different ideas about loyalty keep turning a useful partnership into an exhausting negotiation. I enjoyed those confrontations as much as the battles—and the battles give them considerable competition.

If this has been sitting on your “maybe someday” list, I’d move it up. There’s violence, some grim stretches, and an initial adjustment to the names and competing kingdoms. But the friendships, grudges, and difficult choices give you reasons to stay invested beyond who wins the next fight. Once I cared about these people, watching another episode became a very easy decision.
