Making a movie sounds like a pretty good job until you consider how many people can make your life miserable. The studio wants one thing, the director wants another, and everybody has an opinion about who should play the lead.

Then the mob gets involved.

*The Offer* takes the making of *The Godfather* and turns it into a story about trying to get anything accomplished when almost everybody has the power to tell you no.

**What It’s About**

Miles Teller plays Albert S. Ruddy, a producer attempting to bring Mario Puzo’s novel to the screen. Having a popular book to work from helps. Getting the right people hired, keeping the studio happy and preventing the whole production from falling apart is another matter.

Matthew Goode plays Paramount executive Robert Evans, whose support comes with a substantial personality attached. Dan Fogler is Francis Ford Coppola, a director with strong ideas about the movie he wants to make, while Juno Temple plays Bettye McCartt, Ruddy’s resourceful assistant.

Outside the studio, opposition from mob boss Joe Colombo (Giovanni Ribisi) gives Ruddy problems that can’t necessarily be resolved with a meeting and a revised budget.

The job becomes a series of negotiations with people who aren’t particularly accustomed to compromising.

**Who It’s For**

If you enjoy stories about difficult people trying to work together, there’s plenty here beyond the connection to a famous movie. Casting decisions, money problems and bruised egos become obstacles with consequences, even though you already know the production eventually succeeds.

Goode is a particular attraction. His Evans can make an ordinary conversation feel like a performance, while Teller gives the series someone comparatively grounded to follow through the commotion. Temple helps keep the problem-solving from becoming an exclusively male occupation.

The personalities are big, the history is dramatized, and ten episodes may feel generous if the filmmaking details don’t interest you. Familiarity with *The Godfather* also adds to the enjoyment.

But for viewers who like Hollywood stories with arguments, humor and a steady supply of complications, *The Offer* is worth making time for.

You know The Godfather got made. The fun of The Offer is watching the arguments, personalities and increasingly difficult negotiations that stood between an idea and a finished movie.
