*The Wrong Missy* is exactly the kind of comedy that could have been terrible. The premise is ridiculous, the characters are exaggerated, and Lauren Lapkus spends much of the movie operating at a level that would be exhausting in real life.

But it works.

It’s genuinely funny.

## What It’s About

David Spade plays Tim, a fairly ordinary guy who meets what seems like his perfect match and decides to invite her on a company trip to Hawaii. There’s just one problem: he texts the wrong Melissa.

Instead of the woman he actually wants to bring, he accidentally invites Missy, a blind date he was very much hoping never to see again.

That mistake basically drives the entire movie.

Missy is loud, inappropriate, unpredictable and completely incapable of understanding when she should probably stop talking. Lauren Lapkus doesn’t play any of this halfway. She throws herself into the character so completely that you have to wonder if this is how she is in real life.

Spade is the perfect counterweight. He doesn’t need to compete with her. Most of the time, he just reacts while Missy makes another situation considerably worse than it was thirty seconds earlier.

That balance is a big part of why the movie works.

It’s broad comedy. Very broad comedy.

There are plenty of crude jokes, ridiculous situations and moments where you know exactly where something is going and laugh anyway. None of this is especially sophisticated, but the timing is good, the cast understands the assignment and the movie keeps moving.

I laughed through a lot of it.

That matters more to me than whether the comedy is clever.

## Who It’s For

If you like David Spade, Happy Madison comedies or movies built around one completely unhinged character destroying every normal situation around them, *The Wrong Missy* is probably for you.

Lauren Lapkus is the whole engine here. If Missy annoys you, the movie almost certainly won’t work. But if she makes you laugh, you’re going to have a pretty good time.

The movie is her.

It’s crude, stupid and completely over the top.

Those things usually don’t do much for me.

This one does.

💡

Lauren Lapkus goes completely over the top, David Spade mostly watches in horror, and somehow the whole thing works.
