This is close. The main thing to fix is the Roy paragraph; right now the wording is a little tangled. I’d also smooth a few transitions.

There’s something very likable about a movie built around a guy who could probably have a much better life if he would just stop being himself for five minutes.

*Tin Cup* understands that perfectly.

Kevin Costner plays Roy McAvoy, a washed-up golf pro running a driving range in West Texas alongside his best friend and caddie, Romeo, played by Cheech Marin.

Roy has more than enough talent to have become something bigger. What he lacks is the willingness to play it safe. He’s always going for the impossible shot, even when the smart play is sitting right in front of him.

And he loses because of it.

## What It’s About

Roy’s life gets more complicated when Dr. Molly Griswold, played by Rene Russo, shows up looking for golf lessons. She also happens to be dating David Simms, a successful professional golfer played by Don Johnson—and an old rival of Roy’s.

That is about all the motivation Roy needs.

From there, *Tin Cup* becomes part golf movie, part romantic comedy and part story about a guy trying to prove that maybe he hasn’t wasted all that talent after all.

Costner is perfect for it. Roy is impulsive, stubborn, proud and almost pathologically unwilling to take the sensible route when a more difficult one is available.

Somehow, that makes him more likable.

The movie also gets the balance right. There’s enough golf to satisfy golf fans, but not so much that everyone else gets left behind. The sport gives the movie structure; Roy, Molly and the people around them give it personality.

## Who It’s For

If you like sports movies, romantic comedies or Kevin Costner in full lovable-loser mode, *Tin Cup* is an easy recommendation.

The cast is a big part of why it works. Costner and Russo have real chemistry, Cheech Marin gives Roy exactly the kind of friend he needs, and Don Johnson delivers exactly the right kind of smug.

It’s funny, easygoing and just serious enough when it needs to be.

Mostly, though, it’s fun.

💡 He may never take the smart shot, but Tin Cup wouldn’t be nearly as much fun if he did.
