A piano tuner probably isn’t the first person you’d think to recruit to open a safe. Then again, most piano tuners can’t hear what’s happening inside a lock.

That’s the trouble with having an unusual talent. Eventually, somebody comes along with an unusual job offer.

**What It’s About**

Leo Woodall plays Niki White, a gifted musician whose extreme sensitivity to sound has ended his plans for a performing career. He now tunes pianos across New York alongside Harry Horowitz (Dustin Hoffman), an older man who’s become both his employer and a father figure.

Niki’s hearing makes everyday life difficult, but it also allows him to pick up things other people can’t. When he discovers he can use that ability to crack safes, he attracts the attention of Uri (Lior Raz), who sees an opportunity to put him to work.

The money becomes particularly tempting when Harry develops serious health problems. Meanwhile, Niki begins a relationship with Ruthie (Havana Rose Liu), a composition student who gives him something else to look forward to.

Unfortunately, his new employers have plans that don’t leave much room for a quiet life.

**Who It’s For**

*Tuner* is a good choice if you enjoy crime movies that spend time getting you interested in the people involved. There’s humor, a romance and a convincing friendship here, and those quieter scenes give the dangerous ones some weight.

Hoffman is especially welcome as Harry. He brings warmth and a talkative ease that plays well against Woodall’s more withdrawn Niki. You can understand why this young man would want to help him, even when the solution involves a spectacularly questionable career move.

The sound also gives the safecracking scenes an unusual tension. Listening becomes part of the suspense, which suits a story about somebody whose greatest skill also makes him vulnerable.

A piano tuner discovers he’s good at opening safes, but the people offering him work are harder to figure out. Dustin Hoffman and Leo Woodall give this unusual crime story plenty of reason to care about what happens between the break-ins.
