Most parents assume that sending their children to school means they'll receive an education. It's a reasonable expectation, considering how much money we spend making that happen.

But what happens when the school assigned to your child isn't doing its job? And what if the only realistic chance of getting into a better school comes down to having your name drawn out of a hat?

That's the uncomfortable situation at the center of *Waiting for Superman*.

**What It’s About**

Director Davis Guggenheim examines America's public education system through the experiences of five children whose families are trying to give them something better.

Anthony, Bianca, Daisy, Emily and Francisco come from different backgrounds, but their families share the same concern: the schools available to them aren't providing the opportunities they need.

The documentary explores some of the reasons American schools struggle, including ineffective teachers, bureaucratic resistance to reform and a system that can make it extraordinarily difficult to remove poor performers.

We also meet education reformers like Geoffrey Canada, founder of the Harlem Children's Zone, and Michelle Rhee, who challenged established practices while leading Washington, D.C.'s public schools.

But the film keeps returning to the children. Their families have identified alternative schools they believe can provide a better education. Unfortunately, there are far more applicants than available seats.

Admission comes down to a lottery.

**Who It’s For**

*Waiting for Superman* is for anyone interested in education, government accountability or what happens when large institutions lose sight of the people they're supposed to serve.

Guggenheim makes a complicated subject surprisingly accessible. Statistics and policy arguments are part of the story, but watching parents hope their child's name gets called makes the consequences of a failing system much harder to dismiss.

The documentary has a definite point of view. It's sympathetic to charter schools and education reformers, while taking a particularly critical look at teachers unions and the protections afforded to ineffective teachers. There are reasonable arguments that the film oversimplifies some of these issues.

And because it was released in 2010, it shouldn't be mistaken for an up-to-date assessment of American education.

Still, the central question remains worth considering: Why should a child's chance at a decent education depend so heavily on luck?

It's an engaging, sometimes frustrating documentary that gives viewers plenty to think about, whether they agree with its conclusions or not.

Five children want a better education. Whether they get one may come down to a lottery. Waiting for Superman puts a human face on the failures of America's public education system.
