If you've watched [*Mystery, Alaska*](https://www.bensmovieguide.com/tag/movie-mystery-alaska-1999/), starring Russell Crowe, Burt Reynolds, and Hank Azaria, you might assume those spectacular mountain backdrops and the little town nestled beneath them are somewhere in Alaska. Surprisingly, **the movie wasn't filmed in Alaska at all.** Most of it was shot in and around Canmore, Alberta, Canada, with additional filming in nearby Banff National Park. And the town of Mystery? That was built specifically for the movie.

**Canmore, Alberta: Alaska Without the Alaska**

Canmore is a real mountain town in the Canadian Rockies, about an hour west of Calgary and just outside Banff National Park. Surrounded by towering peaks, forests, and lakes, it provided exactly the kind of scenery the filmmakers needed to make their fictional Alaskan community believable.

And here's something that makes the location particularly appropriate: hockey is a big deal in this part of Canada. The filmmakers recruited local residents as extras, including people who had played competitive hockey. So while the town of Mystery was fictional, quite a few of the people skating around in the background knew exactly what they were doing.

**The Town and Hockey Rink Were Built for the Movie**

One of the more interesting things about *Mystery, Alaska* is that the filmmakers didn't simply find a picturesque little village and start shooting. They actually constructed a town set near Canmore's Quarry Lake, along with the outdoor hockey rink where so much of the story takes place.

Quarry Lake is a real location that visitors can still explore, although you won't find the fictional town or its famous hockey rink waiting for you. The surrounding mountains, however, are very much the same ones you see in the movie.

And considering how important that little outdoor rink is to the story, it's fitting that the filmmakers went to so much trouble to create it. After all, *Mystery, Alaska* isn't really about playing the New York Rangers. It's about a small town where hockey is practically a religion, and everybody knows everybody else's business.

They couldn't have picked a much better setting.
