- Description: Paul Bettany and Kirsten Dunst make Wimbledon more than another romantic comedy. It’s a funny, easygoing sports movie about one last chance at both love and winning.

*Wimbledon* is one of those movies that sounds almost too lightweight to work. Paul Bettany plays Peter Colt, a fading British tennis player who enters Wimbledon knowing his career is nearly over. Kirsten Dunst is Lizzie Bradbury, a young American star whose career is heading in exactly the opposite direction. They meet, sparks fly, and suddenly Peter starts winning matches nobody expects him to win.

You can probably see where some of this is going.

That doesn’t really matter. *Wimbledon* works because it’s an unusually likable combination of sports movie and romantic comedy, and neither side feels like an excuse for the other. Bettany is especially good as the aging athlete who knows his best tennis is behind him but gets one unexpected chance to find out whether there might still be something left. His relationship with Dunst gives the movie energy, but his improbable tournament run gives it stakes.

There’s nothing particularly heavy about *Wimbledon*, and that’s part of why I like it. It’s funny, easy to watch, romantic without becoming overly sentimental, and the tennis gives the story just enough momentum to keep it from feeling like another interchangeable rom-com.

Twenty-plus years later, this is exactly the kind of movie that can disappear from the conversation.

It shouldn’t.
