*Zulu* is one of those movies that can look like homework from a distance.

It was made in 1964, it takes place during the Anglo-Zulu War, and the opening moves at a pace that definitely reminds you how old it is.

Give it a little time.

### What It’s About

Technically, *Zulu* is about a battle between thousands of Zulu warriors and roughly 150 British soldiers. But the movie is really built around two British officers: an engineer played by Stanley Baker and a career infantry officer played by Michael Caine.

The problem is simple: how does a tiny British force survive when it’s outnumbered roughly 25 to 1?

The engineer technically holds senior rank, so he takes command. The career officer clearly isn’t thrilled about it. He’s a snot about it, but he’s British, so naturally he’s very proper about being a snot.

Then the Zulus arrive.

Once the threat appears, the age of the movie matters a lot less. The scale is still impressive, the formations are easy to follow, and the movie lets the battle develop instead of chopping everything into pieces. You understand where people are, what they’re trying to do and how quickly things can go wrong.

A lot of modern action movies are bigger but somehow harder to follow. *Zulu* does the opposite. The geography is simple, the danger is obvious, and every change in position matters.

### Who It’s For

If you like war movies but usually stay inside the World War II lane, *Zulu* is an easy one to branch out with. It has the scale, tension and sense of impending disaster you want from a great war movie, just in a very different setting.

And if you tend to avoid movies made before you were born because you assume they’ll feel too slow or dated, this is exactly the kind of exception worth making.

💡

**Zulu* may take a little patience at the start, but once the battle begins, you stop thinking about how old the movie is.
