Why it’s the Weekly Pick

Your car breaks down on a remote highway. A trucker offers to take your wife to a nearby diner to call for help while you stay with the car. Nothing particularly suspicious about that. But when you get to the diner, she isn’t there. And when you find the trucker again, he claims he’s never seen you before. That’s the situation Kurt Russell finds himself in during Breakdown, and it’s why I’m recommending it for your next movie night.

What I like about Russell here is that he’s believable as a husband who’s scared and increasingly desperate. He doesn’t have special training or a reassuring plan. He’s trying to figure out what happened to his wife, and every conversation makes it harder to know whom he can trust. J.T. Walsh is particularly good as the trucker. His calm responses make Russell’s frustration—and yours—even worse. You want somebody to give this man a straight answer.

The movie gets more elaborate as it goes, and some of the later action requires a little generosity. But by then, I’m invested enough to go along with it. If you want a thriller that gives you a clear reason to care, keeps you anxious, and gets moving without much fuss, Breakdown is an easy choice.
