Why it’s the Weekly Pick

The World’s Fastest Indian is one of those movies I can recommend to almost anybody.

Anthony Hopkins plays Burt Munro, an aging New Zealander who has spent years working on an old Indian motorcycle and dreaming about taking it to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. That sounds like the setup for a sports movie about breaking a speed record, but the record really isn’t what makes the movie work. It’s Burt.

He doesn’t have much money, his motorcycle is held together by ingenuity as much as engineering, and practically every stage of the trip gives him another reason to turn around. He keeps going anyway. Along the way, he meets people who could have been written as obstacles but instead become part of what makes the movie so enjoyable. Hopkins makes Burt stubborn, funny, eccentric and enormously easy to root for.

That’s why I’m picking it this week. It’s warm without becoming overly sentimental, inspiring without feeling manufactured, and genuinely fun to spend a couple of hours with. If you want a movie that leaves you feeling better than when you started it, this is it.
