There are basically three types of sports movies:

Sports movies about underdogs,..

Sports movies about second chances...

and sports movies based on true stories.

The Rookie manages to be all three without feeling like it was assembled from a Disney checklist.

What It’s About

Jim Morris once had a legitimate shot at professional baseball. Then injuries got in the way, the dream disappeared, and life moved on. Years later, Morris is a high school science teacher and baseball coach in a small Texas town. He has a wife, children, a job and a life that seems pretty far removed from professional sports.

Then his players notice something...their coach can still throw.

Hard.

When Morris pushes the team to take their season more seriously, they make him a deal: if they win the district championship, he has to try out for professional baseball again.

They win.

So he goes.

And suddenly a man who thought his baseball career ended years earlier is standing in front of major-league scouts throwing fastballs in the upper 90s.

The crazy part is that The Rookie is based on a true story.

Who It’s For

If you like feel-good sports movies, true stories or movies about getting another shot at something you thought was over, The Rookie is an easy recommendation.

You don’t need to care much about baseball.

Quaid keeps the movie grounded because he never plays Jim Morris like some larger-than-life sports hero. He feels like a regular husband, father and teacher who suddenly finds himself chasing something that makes very little practical sense.

It’s sincere, easy to watch and one of those sports movies that works even if the sport itself isn’t really your thing.

The Rookie is exactly what a feel-good sports movie should be: sincere, easy to watch and just sentimental enough without drowning in it.
