Why It’s the Weekly Pick

There are plenty of movies about chasing a dream.

The Rookie is a little different because Jim Morris had already given his up.

Dennis Quaid plays Morris, a high school science teacher and baseball coach in a small Texas town who once had a shot at professional baseball before injuries ended his career. Years later, while throwing batting practice to his players, he discovers something surprising.

He can still throw hard.

Really hard.

His team makes him a deal: if they can win the district championship, Morris has to keep his end of the bargain and try out for the major leagues.

It sounds like the kind of thing Hollywood would invent.

They didn't.

The Rookie is based on Morris's real-life journey from high school teacher and coach to Major League Baseball pitcher at an age when most players are already wondering how much longer their careers will last.

And that true-story foundation is a big reason the movie works.

This isn't really a baseball movie about winning the big game. It's about what happens when the thing you thought was over suddenly becomes possible again — and whether you're willing to risk looking ridiculous by trying.

You don't need to love baseball.

You just need to understand what it feels like to wonder whether you gave up on something too soon.

That's enough.
