Why it’s the Weekly Pick

Last Action Hero is one of those movies that makes more sense once you stop expecting it to be a normal Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie.

A young movie fan named Danny is magically pulled into the world of his favorite action hero, Jack Slater, played by Schwarzenegger. Suddenly, all the ridiculous things we normally accept in action movies become part of the joke. Cars explode for no reason. Heroes never seem to run out of ammunition. The bad guys are obviously bad guys. Danny understands the rules because he's spent his whole life watching these movies. Jack doesn't even realize there are rules.

That's what makes the movie work for me. Schwarzenegger is basically making fun of the exact kind of larger-than-life character that made him famous, and he's much better at it than the movie's reputation would suggest.

It's loud, occasionally ridiculous, and definitely a product of the early '90s. But underneath all of that is a surprisingly clever idea and a movie that's having fun with action-movie clichés without pretending it doesn't also enjoy them.

If you've dismissed Last Action Hero as one of Schwarzenegger's lesser movies, I'd give it another shot. I think it was simply easier to misunderstand than it was to appreciate.
