Why it’s the Weekly Pick

Offering a hitchhiker a ride seems like a decent thing to do. In a thriller, I’d want to know a little more about both people before getting in the car. Switchback puts Danny Glover behind the wheel and Jared Leto in the passenger seat, while Dennis Quaid’s FBI agent follows the trail of a serial killer. There’s a lot of open country ahead, and plenty of reason to be uncomfortable.

What I enjoy here is how much the people and places contribute to the suspense. Glover is easy company, Leto gives you questions to chew on, and R. Lee Ermey makes a local sheriff somebody worth spending time with. The highways, small towns, and snowy mountains give the story room to develop. I like a thriller that lets me get interested in a conversation before reminding me somebody could be in danger.

It takes a little time bringing its different threads together, and you’ll need to allow it a few conveniences along the way. But if you’re in the mood for a murder hunt with an appealing cast, some uneasy companionship, and a memorable railroad setting, this is my pick for the evening. Go in knowing as little as possible.
