Why it’s the Weekly Pick

Tin Cup is technically a golf movie, but golf is really just the setting. What it’s actually about is a guy who knows exactly how to get out of his own way—and almost never does.

Kevin Costner plays Roy McAvoy, a gifted former golfer running a beat-up driving range in West Texas when Dr. Molly Griswold, played by Rene Russo, shows up looking for lessons. The complication is that she’s dating Roy’s old rival, David Simms, played by Don Johnson. Before long, Roy decides the best possible response is to try to qualify for the U.S. Open.

Of course he does.

What makes Tin Cup work for me is that Roy is both incredibly easy to root for and completely responsible for most of his problems. Costner is funny without trying too hard to be funny, Russo gives the movie some real chemistry, and Cheech Marin is terrific as Roy’s friend and caddie, Romeo.

You absolutely do not need to care about golf. This is a sports movie, romantic comedy and character comedy all rolled together, with one of those endings that could only work because the movie has spent two hours convincing you exactly who this guy is.

For an easy movie night with plenty of laughs and just enough heart, Tin Cup is a great watch.
