By the time we meet Bad Blake, his career has gone from concert halls to bowling alleys. The talent is still there. Unfortunately, so is the drinking, and it's doing a pretty good job of ruining whatever he has left.

Crazy Heart isn't a complicated story. What makes it worth watching is how believable Jeff Bridges makes the man at its center.

What It’s About

Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges) was once a respected country singer. Now he's driving from one small gig to another, playing bars and bowling alleys, drinking too much and taking terrible care of himself. He's not just down on his luck. He's helped put himself there.

He meets Jean Craddock (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a journalist and single mother who interviews him for a story. A romance develops, and Bad has something to look forward to beyond his next show.

There's also Tommy Sweet (Colin Farrell), a younger country star whose career took off after learning from Bad. Tommy hasn't forgotten that, and his willingness to help gives Bad a possible way back into the music business. Robert Duvall plays Wayne, an old friend who knows how far Bad has fallen.

But none of them can fix Bad's life for him.

Who It’s For

Jeff Bridges is excellent here. Bad looks like a mess, sounds like a man who's been singing and drinking for decades, and carries himself like someone who's wasted a lot of chances. There's nothing polished about the performance, which is why I believed it.

I also really liked Maggie Gyllenhaal. The romance works because Jean isn't just there to rescue him. She's interested in Bad, but she has her own life and good reasons to be careful. Farrell's character gives the story an unexpectedly generous side, too; he's successful without treating his old mentor like a nobody.

The music is good, and the movie takes its time. If you need big surprises, this probably isn't your movie. But if you enjoy stories about people trying to climb out of holes they dug themselves, Crazy Heart is well worth renting.

Jeff Bridges is completely believable as a country singer who's hit rock bottom. The music, the romance and a few people who haven't given up on him make his attempt at a comeback worth watching.
