Ryan Reynolds has built a pretty successful career out of being the guy who talks a little too much.

It’s what makes him entertaining.

Mayday puts that to good use.

Reynolds plays a U.S. Navy pilot sent on a secret Cold War mission that goes very wrong, leaving him stranded behind enemy lines. His best chance of getting out comes from an ex-KGB agent played by Kenneth Branagh.

Sounds heavy, right?

It’s not.

Mayday leans into the buddy-comedy side of the story, and Reynolds and Branagh are good enough together to keep the whole thing moving. It’s funny when it needs to be, has enough action to keep things interesting, and never seems overly concerned with pretending any of this is terribly serious.

It’s basically a Cold War escape movie with two guys who probably shouldn’t trust each other figuring out that they may not have much choice.

Sometimes that’s enough.

Mayday is streaming on Apple TV.

Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh make the odd-couple pairing work. Funny, fast-moving, and easy to recommend.
